Tarana Wireless, Inc. announced today the official approval of Gigabit 1 (G1) — the company’s next-generation fixed wireless access (ngFWA) broadband platform — for use in Canada’s unlicensed 6 GHz spectrum. Both the G1 Remote Node (RN) and Base Node (BN) radios are now certified through Comsearch Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) for commercial operation in 6 GHz throughout Canada.
Tarana first announced G1’s 6 GHz capability in October of 2023. Known for its unprecedented ability to cancel radio interference, G1 is an essential tool for operators planning to leverage unlicensed 6 GHz. More than 250 ISPs in 24 countries are already using Tarana’s ngFWA technology to reach underserved communities with better broadband.
G1 brings another unique and critically important capability to operation in 6 GHz spectrum: flexible sub-carrier channel configuration. By operating in multiple independent sub-channels, the system can achieve full gigabit performance despite limited availability of clean, contiguous 160 MHz channels. This feature will be crucial, even in markets with few incumbents, as more competition enters the 6 GHz band.
G1’s 6 GHz authorization in Canada will also enable the country’s service providers to use Tarana’s recently announced RNv, a lower-cost RN radio designed to make ngFWA technology even more accessible for operators. Better yet, compatibility with existing 5 GHz G1 radios will allow Canadian operators to deploy in 6 GHz without losing their scaling momentum.
Ilkka Niva, Tarana’s Director of Regulatory Compliance, shared, “We’re thrilled to help our customers get started with 6 GHz in Canada. With G1, they can offer gigabit speeds to compete with incumbent operators and further expand the reach of fast, reliable broadband to underserved communities. We look forward to helping them make progress on Canada’s digital divide.”
